Hackney Play Association was founded in 1972 by a group of parents to campaign for improved play provision in the borough. The Association is registered charity number 272651.

On registering as a charity in 1976, the Association adoped the following:

Objects of the Ascociation

(1) The object of the Association shall be the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure-time occupations for children resident in the London Borough of Hackney being facilities:

(a) of which such children have need by reason of their youth or social and economic circumstances, and

(b) which will improve the conditions of life for such children by promoting their physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

(2) In furtherance of the objects of the Association... the Committee shall have the following powers:

(a) To promote and develop an appreciation amongst the public of the short and long term value of children's play towards improving the condition fo life for young people in the Borough

(b) To examine, co-ordinate and expand where desirable the resources devoted to the provision of children's play facilities in the Borough...
