Discover ‘Playful Hackney’ – part of Find Your London festival

Families are invited to discover some of Hackney’s free hidden play spaces as part of a Playful Hackney weekend, from 18-20 March 2016.

Hosted by Hackney Play Association, the weekend is part of the Find Your London Festival which celebrates London’s outdoor spaces, from gardens to parks, high streets to marketplaces. Playful Hackney events are totally free, and open to families from all parts of the capital and beyond. They include:

Taste of adventure

Play sessions at two of Hackney’s long-standing adventure playgrounds at Homerton Grove and Shakespeare Walk. Built on former bomb-sites, these playgrounds have been loved and cherished by generations of children. Youngsters can enjoy den building, gardening, woodwork, craft activities, plus dare-devil swings and zipwires.

 Experience a play street

With over 40 play streets spread across the borough, Hackney is indisputably the play street capital of London. Residents, several schools, a church and a children’s centre take part, opening up their streets regularly for play and community.

On this special weekend, Winston Road, one of Hackney’s longest running play streets, will be welcoming families from across London to join in the hopscotch and skipping action – hopefully inspiring more parents to take up the idea! Hackney Play Association provides free support to help residents and schools start up play streets, and the project is funded by Hackney Council and Play England.

Crash course in playful parenting

Parents and grown up friends can join their children playing in Homerton Grove adventure playground – to roast some potatoes on the fire, have a go at the climbing and to see how much fun kids have when left to their own devices outdoors.

There will be also be an indoor screening of Project Wild Thing, an award winning documentary about one man’s journey to understand why his daughter – and all children – don’t play outdoors and what we can do about it. To reserve your place at the screening go to: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/project-wild-thing-free-screening-at-an-adventure-playground-in-hackney-tickets-21736857526

Homerton Grove will also host drop-in ‘info sessions’ for parents on how to start a play street, discussions on how to get children playing outside more often. See the full programme of events here: Playful Hackney.
