Car Free Day

Celebrate Car-Free Day with Hackney Council & Hackney Play Streets, Sunday 22 September 2019

To mark Car Free Day in Hackney, Hackney Council and Hackney Play Streets will be facilitating a mass Play Street event on Sunday 22nd September 2019. Hackney Council will also make Stoke Newington Church Street car free on this day, allowing residents, businesses and visitors to experience what the road could look like with fewer vehicles.

Hackney has been at the forefront of World Car Free Day for many years and was the first council in London to reintroduce official Play Streets. Closing Church Street for the day and a mass Play Street event are both part of the council’s 2019 Car Free Day Celebration. Find out more here.

What else is happening in London on Car Free Day?

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched the biggest ever celebration of Car Free Day in the capital, including hundreds of free activities taking place on 20 kilometres of closed roads around Tower Bridge, London Bridge and the City of London. By hosting a Play Street/Estate on Car Free Day, you will be part of the capital wide effort to help Londoners ‘reclaim’ their streets and ‘re-imagine’ a car-free city.
